The Geophysical Institute has a vacancy for a research fellow within the field of climate dynamics for a period of 4 years.
We are seeking a highly motivated candidate to conduct research as part of a PhD study aimed at understanding the dynamics of warm climates, in particular the processes controlling Arctic sea ice cover, conditions in the polar and subpolar oceans, and the long-term sensitivity of the climate system. The study will include the use of process models, output from global climate models and information from paleoclimate records. The successful candidate will be part of the DYNAWARM (Dynamics of Past Warm Climates) project within the Centre for Climate Dynamics at the Bjerknes Centre, and will be encouraged to interact with physical oceanographers, atmospheric scientists and paleoceanographers during the course of their studies.
Applicants must have achieved a master's degree or equivalent in oceanography, meteorology, atmospheric sciences, physics, applied mathematics or related fields, or have submitted their master thesis for assessment by the application deadline. It is prerequisite that the formal admission requirements for the PhD programme are met before an appointment can be made.

5.Research fellow (PhD position) in tropical meteorology
The Geophysical Institute has a vacancy for a 4-year position as research fellow within the field of tropical meteorology.
We seek candidates with experience and interest in numerical modelling, climate prediction and analysis of mechanisms for climate variability. This research project aims at enhancing seasonal-to-decadal climate prediction for the Horn of Africa. Rainfall variations impact society to varying degrees, and most strongly in developing countries where infrastructure and preparedness to deal with climatic shifts are poor. In particular, drought conditions can influence food security, which in turn can impact health, while increased rainfall can create conditions favorable to diseases, such as Malaria. The Horn of Africa is one region that can suffer from prolonged drought conditions and Malaria is prevalent. Variations in climate of this region are partly linked to tropical sea surface temperature, which exhibit high-degree of predictability on seasonal timescales.
The aims of this PhD research project are (1) to better understand the mechanisms for rainfall variability in the Horn of Africa; (2) to assess the predictability of climate in the Horn of Africa on seasonal-to-decadal timescales and identify limitations of current forecast systems; and (3) to investigate methods – statistical and dynamical – for enhancing predictions at a regional level. The student will analyse observational and model data and perform experiments with climate models. He/she will be part of multi-disciplinary team and will contribute to other initiatives at the Geophysical Institute and the Centre for International Health, University of Bergen.
Applicants must have achieved a master's degree or equivalent in meteorology or related fields (applied mathematics or physics), or have submitted their master thesis for assessment by the application deadline. It is prerequisite however, that the formal admission requirements for the PhD programme are met before appointment can be made.
Skills in dynamical meteorology/oceanography are required and experience in numerical modeling, data analysis and programming will be an advantage.
The research fellow must take part in the University's approved PhD programme leading to the degree within a time limit of 3 years. Application for admission to the PhD programme, including a project plan outline for the training module, will be worked out in collaboration with the staff at the institute.
In total, the fellowship period is 4 years. For positions with 4-year duration 25 pct. of the period will be designated to teaching and/or administrative tasks. The fellowship period may be reduced if the successful applicant has held previous employment as a research fellow or similar.
The teaching language will normally be Norwegian, but some of the faculty’s teaching programmes use English. Foreign candidates will be given the opportunity to learn Norwegian.
Starting salary on grade 48 (code 1017) in the Civil Service pay grade table scale; currently NOK 391,300 gross p.a.; following ordinary meriting regulations.

8. Position available for a PhD student
Starting May 1st 2012, the Netherlands Centre for Biodiversity (NCB) Naturalis has a position available for a PhD student (4 years).
You are an energetic and enthusiastic biologist with interest in
systematics in general and the project specifically (see below). You are eager to join our new institute and to study the NCB Naturalis natural history collections.
PhD project: Evolution in marine planktonic gastropods
As a consequence of increasing atmospheric CO2, the world's oceans are warming and slowly becoming more acidic. Understanding the implications of these changes for marine organisms and ecosystems is still in its infancy, but recent studies have shown that calcification is one of the physiological processes that is severely impacted. Euthecosomes (shelled holoplanktonic gastropods) have delicate aragonite shells and have been identified as exceptionally vulnerable to rising CO2. It is well-known that intraspecific variation is important for a species adaptive potential, but virtually nothing is known about critical intraspecific genetic or phenotypic variation in this group. For selected species the
PhD student will examine intraspecific morphological and molecular variation. Using naturally occurring gradients in the degree of ocean acidification across spatial and temporal scales, he/she will examine vulnerability to ocean acidification, historical population demography, and molecular signatures of selection.
General requirements and skills
The successful candidate should have a Master's degree in biology with an interest in oceanography, marine biology, ecology & evolution or a related field. Excellent command of the English language (written and verbal) is required. He/she has a scientific and critical attitude, excellent time management and organizational skills, and the ability to work independently. Experience in molecular genetics, genomics and/or knowledge of NGS approaches and analyses is a distinct advantage. The
ideal candidate will be highly motivated with a demonstrated capacity for multidisciplinary research.
We offer
A fulltime contract (36 hours per week) for a period of four years. A maximum salary of circa € 39,000 gross per year. All our employees are incorporated into a pension fund. The successful candidate will be employed by NCB Naturalis in Leiden. The candidate will also be affiliated to the University of Amsterdam. The appointment must lead to the completion of a PhD thesis. During your appointment you will be supervised by Dr. Katja T.C.A. Peijnenburg. Feel free to contact Dr.
Peijnenburg with questions about the research or position
(K.T.C.A.Peijnenburg@uva.nl).
Procedure
You are invited to submit your application including your curriculum vitae, and the names and e-mail addresses of at least two persons who can be contacted for reference (and who have agreed to be contacted) before April 1th 2012 by e-mail to; sollicitaties@ncbnaturalis.nl, or by mail; NCB Naturalis, HR department, PO box 9517, 2300 RA Leiden, the
