The CeiMar was born in 2009 when the Universities of Cadiz, Huelva and Málaga conformed a consortium in order to present a project and participate in the call for Campus of International Excellence.
As a result, the project, which was introduced in the first stage of the evaluation in 2009, received the Quality Award for its “originality and innovative character”. For its participation in the call in 2010, CeiMAR has improved its strategy and plan and has incorporated important innovations, among others it is important to point out the aggregation of the Universities of Almeria and Granada to agglutinate the project to the whole Andalusian University System concerning all aspects related to the Sea, and what is more important to promote one of the great strengths of CeiMAR, to work with two very different marine systems: The Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.
Other important innovations of the current call are focused on the internationalization of the Campus of Excellence and the attraction of talent through the design of Specific Action Plans: the aim to generate and impulse a Spanish Marine Technology as the vertebrate axis of the CEI; the joint strategic reflection of all members of the aggregation destined to develop a strategy, some objectives and ambitious action plans according to the vision of CeiMAR; a proposal for an ambitious R+D+I based on the development of the International Research and Transfer Centre of Marine Environment that will coordinate the unique facilities and supporting scientific infrastructure which will be created along the Andalusian coast according to the marine environment; and finally, discipline to research and the reinforcement of the CeiMAR as a transmission element of the sustainability and equality through the application of extrapolated measures to the rest of the society among others.
