The UAlg was founded in 1979 and is the institution with the largest official marine environment teaching offer in southern Portugal. It is divided into four campuses: the Penha, Saude, Portimao and Gambelas Campuses. The Gambelas Campus is the site of the Faculty of Science and Technology and the two research centres that specialise in the marine environment: the Centre for Marine and Environmental Research (CIMA) and the Marine Sciences Centre (CCMAR).
The Faculty of Science and Technology offers undergraduate studies in Marine Sciences and Marine Biology and undergraduate degrees in Biology and Biotechnology with contents focused on the marine environment. The UAlg’s undergraduate degrees in Marine Biology are among the most popular in Portugal (this degree does not exist in Spain). The postgraduate degree offer includes the Masters in Aquaculture and Fisheries, Marine Biology, Biotechnology, Renewable Energies and Energy Management, Geomatics and Oceanography. These are joined by the offer of four Erasmus Mundus Masters, two of which are the Masters in Water and Coastal Management and Marine Biodiversity and Conservation.
The lines of research at the UAlg are grouped into two major research centres: the CIMA and the CCMAR. The CIMA is structured in four major lines of research: dynamic processes in the marine environment, morpho-sedimentary processes, large-scale geological processes and impacts of global change. Its researchers are responsible for teaching degrees such as the Masters in Oceanography and Geomatics and the PhD programme offers the doctorate in Marine and Coastal Management, among others. The CCMAR is a scientific research unit affiliated with the University of Algarve, but is a private institution.
Together with the University of Oporto’s Interdisciplinary Centre for Environmental and Marine Research CIIMAR, it constitutes the CIMAR, the largest research unit in the field of marine sciences in Portugal. This research centre is organised in two main divisions: biotechnology and aquaculture and living resources.
