The UAL is a public institution that was founded in 1993. Most of its facilities are located on the La Cañada Campus in La Cañada de San Urbano on the outskirts of Almeria. As for teaching related to the CEIMAR, the university offers several undergraduate degrees (Environmental Sciences, Chemistry), Masters (Industrial and Agricultural Biotechnology, Monitoring and Adaptation to Global Change) Doctoral programmes (Industrial and Agricultural Biotechnology, Environmental and Applied Sciences) and specialised courses (e.g., Coastal Areas and Desalination Plants, Water Management in Coastal Areas). A total of 11 research groups (some 40 doctoral researchers) from the UAL conduct research on topics related to the marine environment, outstanding among them the lines of microalgae biotechnology, aquaculture and water resources.
