Andalusian Institute of Agricultural and Fisheries Research and Training (IFAPA)

The Andalusian Institute of Agricultural and Fisheries Research and Training, founded in 2003 and attached to the Andalusian Government’s Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, contributes to the modernisation of the food industry in Andalusia. The IFAPA’s privileged position ensures its presence in most national and international scientific and technology forums related to marine culture and fisheries resources. In the field of fisheries and aquaculture, the IFAPA has three centres in Andalusia: (1) The Toruño Centre in the Port of Santa María (Cádiz), oriented to genomic applications in reproduction, nutrition and immunity in aquatic species, functional food in aquaculture, disease prevention and animal welfare, studies on the reproduction, nutrition, physiology and pathology of marine species of aquacultural interest and innovation in marine microalgae production, (2) the IFAPA Centre of San Fernando (Cadiz), specialising in career counselling and training for the extractive fisheries sector and coastal and professional diving, and (3) the IFAPA’s Water Centre in El Pino in Cartaya in the province of Huelva, which concentrates on servicing the integral cultivation of aquaculture species.

The IFAPA researchers in the area of marine cultures and fisheries resources are attached to two research groups: AGR246: Diversification and Biotechnology in Aquaculture, and AGR247: Marine Cultures and Fisheries Resources.
