The Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) is a public research body attached to the Ministry of Science and Innovation that is dedicated to marine science research, especially in relation to scientific knowledge of oceans, sustainable fisheries resources and the marine environment; it is also a consultancy agency on oceanographic and fisheries affairs for the state and regional government. The IEO represents Spain in most international science and technology forums related to the sea and its resources.
The IEO has two centres in the Autonomous Community of Andalusia: the Fisheries Biology Station in the city of Cadiz and Malaga Oceanography Centre in Fuengirola. The centre in Cadiz develops research lines on living marine resources and the study of marine ecosystems and their impact on anthropogenic activities. These lines cover all aspects of research on physical, chemical, geological and marine pollution oceanography and the evaluation of fisheries resources in the western Mediterranean, the Strait of Gibraltar and the Gulf of Cadiz. Its researchers are involved in both teaching and the supervision of final Masters projects and student internships in the Official Postgraduate Masters in Aquaculture and Fisheries: Marine Resources and Sustainability (ACUIPESCA) and Oceanography offered by the UCA. They are associated to two research groups: RNM213: The Marine Biology and Fisheries Group and RNM338: Marine Ecosystems in Alborán: Temporal Trends and Climate Change.
