The Andalusian Marine Sciences Institute (ICMAN). The ICMAN is an international benchmark in the area of basic and applied research in the field of the marine sciences and in the training of researchers and technicians in mariculture, marine ecology, oceanography and sustainable management of coastal water ecosystems. It is a pioneer in research in semi-intensive and intensive fishing aquiculture in Spain and collaborates with major aquiculture firms. The ICMAN is located in the Bay of Cadiz Nature Park, close to the Faculty of Environmental and Marine Sciences and the Faculty of Sciences. Since its inception, its proximity to both faculties and its research subjects have promoted inter-institutional collaboration with the university, which is embodied in the training and management of two UCA-ICMAN Associated Units in the lines of interdisciplinary oceanography and molecular pathology and environmental quality.
The ICMAN has specific facilities and infrastructures for research on marine topics, such as a plant for the cultivation of reproducers and larval, auxiliary phyto and zooplankton cultures, histopathology and molecular biology laboratory, a physics-chemistry-biology and pollution analysis service, oceanographic equipment and teams, remote sensing systems and equipment and infrastructure for field sampling, among others. The research staff is associated to the departments of Aquaculture and Marine Biology and Coastal Management and Ecology and to two lines of research: fish physiology and sustainable aquaculture and coastal management and ecology.
